PROFINET

PROFINET is an industry technical standard for data communication over Industrial Ethernet. It was designed to exchange data between controllers and devices, with a particular strength in delivering data under tight time constraints.

Controllers can be PLCs, DCSs, or PACs. Devices can be I/O blocks, vision systems, RFID readers, drives, process instruments, proxies, or even other controllers. 

The Connectware implementation of PROFINET acts as a sniffer and allows to read cyclic data from PROFINET devices. PROFINET connections can be deployed with GSD files. Using GSD files which are associated with each physical Profinet IO-Device, it is possible to decode the data produced by this device and obtain meta information.

This protocol is optional and subject to license.
