It is a product.<\/strong><\/strong><\/strong><\/strong><\/strong><\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Industrial projects usually open with a simple question: which machines do we need? The question that decides the next decade surfaces too late, once the plant is already running: how will this factory have to change?<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Because it will change. New products arrive, lines get reconfigured, quality requirements tighten. Industrial AI and agentic manufacturing add capabilities nobody specified in the original plan. The company expands into new sites and new markets and the plant is expected to keep up with all of it.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">A factory is not finished at go-live. It has shipped version one.<\/p>\n\n<\/div><\/div><\/div><\/div>\n\n<div class=\"wp-block-nb-onecol ce ce-onecol pt-small narrow-2\"><div class=\"container\"><div class=\"row\"><div class=\"col\">\n\n<h2 id=\"h-software-solved-this-decades-ago-change-stays-cheap\" class=\"wp-block-heading\"><strong><strong><strong>Software solved this decades ago: change stays cheap<\/strong><\/strong><\/strong><\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">No one builds software expecting 1.0 to last forever. Modern software is designed so that change stays cheap: features get added, defects get fixed, modules get replaced without tearing down the system around them. Change is not the exception there. It is the default state.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Factories are held to a different standard and pay for it later.<\/p>\n\n<\/div><\/div><\/div><\/div>\n\n<div class=\"wp-block-nb-onecol ce ce-onecol pt-small narrow-2\"><div class=\"container\"><div class=\"row\"><div class=\"col\">\n\n<h2 id=\"h-more-software-did-not-make-the-factory-simpler\" class=\"wp-block-heading\"><strong><strong><strong><strong>More software did not make the factory simpler<\/strong><\/strong><\/strong><\/strong><\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Manufacturers are spending seriously on digitalization: new MES platforms, cloud infrastructure, AI, analytics. But the spending follows the old logic. Every project solves its own problem, every application adds another integration and every team optimizes its own corner of the plant.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The factory gets more digital. It does not get simpler.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The complexity does not come from the technology. It comes from an architecture that was never built for continuous change.<\/p>\n\n<\/div><\/div><\/div><\/div>\n\n<div class=\"wp-block-nb-onecol ce ce-onecol pt-small narrow-2\"><div class=\"container\"><div class=\"row\"><div class=\"col\">\n\n<h2 id=\"h-the-shift-is-in-the-thinking-not-the-tech-stack\" class=\"wp-block-heading\"><strong><strong><strong><strong><strong>The shift is in the thinking, not the tech stack<\/strong><\/strong><\/strong><\/strong><\/strong><\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Most Software-Defined Manufacturing conversations are about the control layer: decoupling logic from proprietary hardware, soft PLCs, virtualized control, lines you reconfigure in software instead of rewiring cabinets. That matters. It is also not the hard part.<br><br>You can virtualize every controller in the plant and still end up with a factory that resists change, because rigidity does not live in the control layer. It lives one level up, in the data and integration architecture and in whether the organization treats the factory as a finished build or an evolving product.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The real shift is a mindset. An architecture that expects change instead of punishing it. One where adding an application does not mean starting another integration project.<\/p>\n\n<\/div><\/div><\/div><\/div>\n\n<div class=\"wp-block-nb-onecol ce ce-onecol pt-small narrow-2\"><div class=\"container\"><div class=\"row\"><div class=\"col\">\n\n<h2 id=\"h-the-advantage-is-won-before-the-first-machine-arrives\" class=\"wp-block-heading\"><strong><strong><strong><strong><strong><strong>The advantage is won before the first machine arrives<\/strong><\/strong><\/strong><\/strong><\/strong><\/strong><\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">When manufacturers talk about speed, they usually mean construction timelines or output figures. The bigger lever sits much earlier, in planning. Not because every technical decision has to be locked down at that stage, but because planning is where you decide whether future change will be cheap or expensive.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">That one decision separates a factory that keeps evolving from one that grows heavier with every project.<\/p>\n\n<\/div><\/div><\/div><\/div>\n\n<div class=\"wp-block-nb-onecol ce ce-onecol pt-small pb-large narrow-2\"><div class=\"container\"><div class=\"row\"><div class=\"col\">\n\n<h2 id=\"h-factories-are-never-finished\" class=\"wp-block-heading\"><strong><strong><strong><strong><strong><strong><strong>Factories are never finished<\/strong><\/strong><\/strong><\/strong><\/strong><\/strong><\/strong><\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The gap between modern software and modern manufacturing is not mainly technical.
